Legend has it that around the year 1100, during the period of the domination of the Moors in Sicily, in the Kalsa district of Palermo, there lived "a beautiful girl with pink skin comparable to peach blossoms at the peak of flowering and a beautiful pair of eyes that they seemed to reflect the beautiful gulf of Palermo”.
The girl was almost always at home, and spent her days taking care of the plants on her balcony.
One day a young Moor happened to be passing by, and as soon as he saw her, he immediately fell in love with her.
Without delay he entered the girl's house and immediately declared his love for her.
The girl, struck by such ardor, reciprocated the love of the young Moro, but soon her happiness vanished as soon as she learned that her beloved would soon leave her to return to the East, where a wife with two children.
So it was that the girl waited for the night and as soon as the Moor fell asleep she killed him and then cut off his head.
He made a vase of the Moor's head, planted basil in it and put it on display outside on the balcony.
In this way, since he could no longer leave, Il Moro would remain with her forever.
Meanwhile, the basil grew luxuriantly and aroused the envy of all the inhabitants of the neighborhood who, not to be outdone, had terracotta pots specially made in the shape of a Moor's Head.
Over the years the BROWN HEADS are donated to wish luck and well-being in the house in which they are displayed.
